Hamburg consists of an old part on the east bank of the Alster, a modern part on the west bank and several residential neighborhoods in the suburbs. The ancient town - the business district - is crossed by numerous canals. Places of interest are: Kohlbrandbrucke, a long suspension bridge that crosses an arm of the Elbe, built in 1975, the Alster Alster interior and exterior, two impressive lakes formed by a dike that closed the mouth of the Alster, the old bastions (now converted into a set of parks and walkways that surround the old quarter), and Hopfenmarkt, a large public plaza.
Among the buildings with historical value are the City, Renaissance structure completed in 1897, and the churches of San Pedro, Santiago, Santa Catalina and San Miguel famous for its high needle. The composers Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms were born in Hamburg, and the poet and playwright Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock is buried in the Altona district.
Among many cultural institutions of the city are the Kunsthalle, a museum with an extensive collection of paintings from the XIX and XX centuries, a museum of Craft and Decorative arts, an Ethnological Museum with a large amount of samples from South Africa and Siberia, a local History Museum, a modern Opera Palace, famous for his contributions to contemporary opera, and theaters. Hamburg has a great zoo and a botanical garden.
