Some facts about Klaipeda
Being the main seaport of Lithuania, Klaipeda is known as "The door of Lithuania to the sea". Klaipeda is Lithuania's third city which has 189 000 inhabitants. It is the northernmost port of the Baltic Sea and the only port in the Baltic that does not cover with ice in winter. Klaipeda is one of the oldest cities of the Baltic, founded in 1252 by the Teutonic Order. With the city architecture is similar to the cities of Scandinavia.
In the Old City that survived the bombing of the Second World War we can admire fachtwerk style buildings with elements of modernism, with houses built mostly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, whose main feature is wooden frame with stone. The oldest houses - from mid-eighteenth century - remind of the tales of Grimm brothers. The German influence in architecture is induscutible in Klaipeda.
Klaipeda is a great tourist center. Fine white sand beaches stretch along the Baltic Sea coast, while the city has a hotel infrastructure and highly developed recreation system. The Klaipeda Aquarium Museum is located in the Fortress of Kopgalis and conduct performances with dolphins and California sea lions which is popular among citizens and tourists. On one side of the Clocks Museum from the Old Post Office towers each weekend you can enjoy carillon music concerts.
