Stavanger walking tour
Stavanger has so many beautiful highlights to best discover on foot. You will be charmed by the city’s old town, its cobblestone streets and small wooden houses and travel back in time through the different periods that were of great importance to the city’s development and economy. Stavanger and its many highs and lows will keep no more secrets from you as you learn about the days of the herring and canning industry and how the city has evolved through time to become the oil capital it is today.
The walk begins in Gamle Stavanger, a very lively area with very well-preserved wooden houses, built during the 18th and 19th centuries as homes for sailors, artisans and merchants. After a major rehabilitation project, it is currently the largest and best preserved settlement of wooden houses in northern Europe.
The walk continues towards the market square, next to the port. A colorful scene made up of fruits, vegetables and souvenirs available to visitors, where there are also flowers and seafood for sale. In the background you can see the impressive Stavanger Cathedral, built in the 12th century. Looking back we will see the statue of the former mayor and well-known writer Alexander Kielland.
The pedestrian street takes us to the Valberg Tower, located on a small hill overlooking the center and the port. This was used as a watchtower to prevent fires.
